In Memory

Joel Cox

A classmate reports that Joel Cox passed away after an auto accident. I believe this happened in the mid-70s. Any remembrances welcome.

Yes, Joel was a great guy and has been missed terribly. It happened on a rig move as Cox Trucking was engaged to move the rig. For some reason and I will yeild to someone with a better memory, he was alone in a vehicle and made a u-turn to catch up with the move. An oncoming car came over the hill and crashed into Joel.

Joel's Mom took care of my grandmother for over 8 years with Alzheimer's disease. We became very close during this time and talked many times about Joel.

That is always the same story I heard about the fatal car crash. I always heard it was on 277 headed towards San Angelo.

When I think of Joel, I remember that we always had a party the last night of school at his house. We started these with parties at Jefferson and did them all the way through Cooper. The last few were great.....watermelons off the Super Duper parking lot....Ask Teddy K. about the broken tail light. The cop that stopped him said that he had stolen watermelons as a kid, but never out of a grocery store parking lot....he always stole them out of a field. He made them take them back and unload them. I was with Joel and we had his red Cougar full and we got away. One year we borrowed some fighting roosters from a farmer south of Buffalo Gap and had rooster fights in his garage. It is a wonder that his parents didn't shoot us.

Miss You,

I knew Joel from the 1st grade at Bowie through Cooper and we were good friends all those years.  Thoughts, lots of good ones! one of my best friends growing up; fastest human outside of Randy Allen and Larry Stowers I'd ever seen; Definitely the fastest at Bowie and Jefferson outside of James McMillian.  I remember two-a-days our sophomore year and we were practicing at the old Fair Park Football Stadium, man it was hot! and I was playing in a defensive back position and during a play looking over to my right and seeing Joel come out of no where at this running back and at break neck speed and just nailing the guy. I mean it was a blur! What an athlete! he was and is still remembered as one of my good friends that I'll never forget.  Larry Dobbs
