After Cooper I went to UT and got a BS in Electical Engineering. I THOUGHT about majoring in music, but my Music Department friends were either going off to be band directors or going hungry. No disrespect to Mr. Thaxton, I just couldn't see myself dealing with a couple of hundred or so nut-cases like we were.
After UT, I put away the horn, sold the motorcycle, and took a job at IBM in Austin with the hopes that working for "I've Been Moved" would enable me to see the world. Turns out I just saw several locations in north Austin.
I did get the horn out occasionally to play with a church orchestra, but didn't touch another motorcycle for 25 years or so. Then in '98 I got a Harley Super Glide. And less than two years later took an early retirement window from IBM to come back to Abilene to take over the family business - Kent's H-D.
Admittedly, coming back to Abilene from Austin was a bit of a culture shock, but we've made a lot of great friends, and Rose and I are having a lot of fun in the business. I've also gotten out the horn again and am playing in the Abilene Community Band.
